What to Do When Calm Feels Unfamiliar

If your success has been built on responsiveness, drive, and vigilance, calm may feel strange.

When calm feels unfamiliar, it doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong. It may simply mean your nervous system learned that alertness equals safety.

For many women in leadership, hyper-awareness became strength. Anticipation kept things running smoothly. Control reduced uncertainty.

So when calm feels unfamiliar, the body may resist it.

You might feel restless.

You might want to fill the silence.

You might reach for distraction.

This is not failure. It’s adaptation.

When calm feels unfamiliar, build tolerance gently.

You might:

  • Practise short moments of stillness

  • Keep your eyes open during relaxation

  • Pair calm with grounding movement

  • Gradually extend quiet time

Safety is built through repetition.

Women in leadership don’t need to abandon drive — they need regulation that supports it.
