We have quarterly reviews at work on our client accounts and often bi-annual performance reviews. Have you ever considered having quarterly wellness reviews and check-ins with your Self?
Who’s the most important person in your life? I’m not just talking about your kids, partner, or your parents… When you start seeing your Self as the most important person in your life, you’ll start moving to prioritise your Self in a different way.
If you’re not checking in with your Self – your health, wellbeing and goals, how do you know if you’re on track and in a good place, or whether you need to course-correct and change your direction, take action or make different decisions to get to where you need to go?
Follow the lead of the seasons and in Spring, Summer, Autumn/Fall and the Winter, try spending half a day checking in with your Self to review, assess and make an action plan for the following areas:
Career
Health (physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, financial)
Personal connections
Family
Creative expression
Checking in with your Self during seasonal changes is the best time to re-focus, so that you can actively make changes to ensure you’re aligning with where you want to be. Think about it… in the Spring we clean our space, we get rid of things we no longer need, we change our wardrobe contents, we eat different, drink different. In the Winter, we eat warming foods, the winter clothes come out, we want comfort.
When we start spending time reviewing the five key areas listed above, instead of complacently letting life happen, you have the choice to consciously redirect and change your life to improve the areas that need attention.
Ask your Self:
Am I in the career or job that still feels good and aligns with who I am? What can I do to step up the ladder?
What do I need in terms of my health and wellbeing? How can I give that to my Self?
Who do I have in my life? Am I giving and receiving in a balanced way?
What is my relationship like with the family? What can I do to improve them? Is there something I need to do to set boundaries for my Self?
How do I express my Self creatively?
If you do this regularly, you can keep your energy and attention focused on the things that are important to you to ensure that you’re operating as your best Self. Oftentimes, years can go by and then we end up feeling unfulfilled and thinking, “How did I get here?” The answer is simple – you didn’t spend enough time on understanding your Self and consciously creating the life you deserve.
That’s not to say that it will be plain sailing even when you’re making conscious choices, more that because your focus is clear, instead of letting life happen you create it and put steps in place to get you there.
At work, we expect to have an annual or bi-annual performance review and then we set objectives, make a plan and monitor how we’re improving. It makes sense to do the same for our life in general, not just our work. Be the most important thing or person in your life!
